Celebrating WCS Women in Construction

WCS Women Building Excellence

On Feb 27th, 2026, two Weyburn Comprehensive School graduates were honoured at the gala hosted by the Construction Association of Saskatchewan.

Kayla Caine won the "On the Tools" Award working as a carpenter with PCL Builders. Alesha Johnson won the "Rising Star" Award working as a superintendent with PCL Construction.

Kayla Caine and Alesha Johnson met at the awards ceremony and quickly discovered that they were both from Weyburn. The event was an incredible evening with all the nominees sharing their experience in the industry. The construction field is only about 11% female so it is an important message for women across Saskatchewan to know that you can find success in the industry as a carpenter, superintendent, engineer, accountant, contract administrator, etc.

It is important to increase diversity in the workplace as it increases the range of thought and perspectives helping to find better solutions in a rapidly changing environment. More young women should consider trades and engineering as a viable career path.

There is space for all of us, opportunity to grow, and opportunity to learn. "Women in Construction Week" is March 1-7 this year, so this would be a great opportunity to encourage more young women to join the industry but also to recognize those that are already in the industry and making significant impacts on those around them.

Kayla and Alesha,  WCS is incredibly proud of you. Keep building excellence and paving the way for the next generation of women in construction.
